Lock down knitting

You can’t go anywhere.

It seems the world is in a state of lockdown and we all have a little more time on our hands.

Time to process what is happening in the world; time to wash our hands a few more times and wipe down those counter tops because we are fighting a global pandemic at the moment.

If you find yourself needing something to do, something to create with a purpose, perhaps you can help us. We’re looking to give all the children and young people in our church a hand knitted beanie in time for winter. South Africa’s winter kicks in around June time and the children we minister to are going to need something to keep their heads warm.

Contact me via social media to pledge a hat. Obviously nothing can be sent over for now but when the time comes, sanitising and postage info will be sent to you. Thanks in advance!

The pattern is below:

BASIC BEANIE PATTERN

You’ll need size 10 (3.25mm) knitting needles and 50g of double knitting wool.

Cast on 96 stiches.

Row one: K2, P2, K2 across line, ending with P2.

Rows 2 to row 12: Repeat Row 1.

Row 13: Knit across.

Row 14: Purl across.

Repeat these 2 rows until the hat is 20 -24cm (depending on size you wish to make), from the start and, ending with a purl row.

Start the decrease.

1st decrease row – K2 together across the row.

Next row: Purl.

Next row: K2 together across.

Last row: Purl across.

Cut a 12″ length of yarn, thread a yarn needle. Carefully pull the last row of knitting from the needle and thread the needle through every stitch. Pull tightly then whip stitch the seam shut.

Thanks to the wonderful Cheryl Crouch for the pattern!

This is not to be confused with knitting hats for the Neema Foundation; though if we receive surplus hats we will ensure that heads across Durban are kept warm this winter 🙂.
